    ESG와 WFSRI

    ESG and the WFSRI

ESG is an important perspective for examining organizational sustainability and responsible management through Environmental, Social, and Governance factors. It has contributed to recognizing a wide range of issues related to Sustainable Development—including climate change and environmental responsibility, human rights and labor, safety, stakeholders, boards and audit, ethics, and compliance—as important elements of management and decision-making.

The WFSRI is not an index developed to replace or reject ESG. It recognizes the fundamental values and concerns represented by Environmental, Social, and Governance factors as an important foundation of Responsible Management while examining Responsible Management more comprehensively in consideration of changing social, environmental, industrial, and technological conditions and the expanding scope of organizational impact.

    I. ESG as an Important Foundation of Responsible Management

Responsibilities relating to Environmental, Social, and Governance factors are important considerations for corporations, public institutions, and other organizations in pursuing Sustainable Development.

Environmental responsibility includes the impacts of organizational activities on the natural environment and corresponding responsibilities relating to climate change response and carbon neutrality, energy, resources and pollution, natural capital, and ecosystems.

Social responsibility encompasses human rights and labor, safety and health, equality and diversity, local communities, Social Value, and impacts on diverse stakeholders.

Governance responsibility concerns the foundations through which an organization makes and oversees responsible decisions, including its decision-making structure, the accountability and independence of its highest decision-making body, audit and Internal Control, ethics, and compliance.

II. Broadening the Perspective from ESG to Responsible Management

The environment surrounding organizations continues to change, and the scope of impacts arising from organizational decisions and activities is also expanding. Accordingly, the perspective used to examine Responsible Management needs to encompass major Environmental, Social, and Governance factors while also considering emerging responsibilities and impacts.

Impacts across supply chains and value chains, the rights and safety of consumers and users, responsible use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), privacy and data responsibility, cybersecurity and information reliability, future and emerging risks, and organizational resilience are important issues increasingly connected with organizational responsibility in a changing environment.

By examining these changes through the perspective of Responsible Management, the WFSRI considers not only how organizations respond to present expectations but also how they recognize and address new responsibilities and risks in an evolving environment.

III. Current Performance and Responsibility for the Future

Responsible Management is not complete when viewed solely through current performance. Management and decisions made today may have long-term impacts on the environment and society, and those impacts may also affect the resources, environment, safety, opportunities, and living conditions available to future generations.

Alongside the fulfillment of present responsibilities, the WFSRI considers an organization’s capacity to fulfill responsibility from a long-term perspective, including sustainable value creation, responses to technological and social change, preparedness for future risks, and resilience.

This is not intended to diminish the importance of ESG, but to build upon the important areas of responsibility addressed by ESG and examine more broadly the responsibilities expected of organizations in a changing environment.

    Ⅳ. ESG와 WFSRI의 관계

IV. Relationship between ESG and the WFSRI

ESG and the WFSRI are not opposing concepts, nor does one simply replace the other.

The WFSRI incorporates major Environmental, Social, and Governance factors as important components of Responsible Management evaluation while broadening the perspective of responsibility—centered on organizational impact and corresponding responsibility—to include stakeholders and communities, supply chains and value chains, digital and AI responsibility, present and future generations, and responses to future risks and change.

Accordingly, ESG is not a separate or incidental element within the WFSRI but an important foundation of Responsible Management, which the WFSRI connects and integrates within a broader Responsible Management perspective.

    Ⅴ. WFSRI 평가에서의 ESG

    V. ESG within WFSRI Evaluation

This perspective of the WFSRI is implemented in actual evaluation through the SEC Evaluation Methodology and SEC Evaluation Framework.

Major Environmental, Social, and Governance factors are not treated merely as isolated areas of concern but are evaluated comprehensively in relation to organizational Responsible Management, Sustainability, impacts on stakeholders and communities, risks and opportunities, and Future Readiness.

How the Evaluation Philosophy of the WFSRI and this broader perspective of Responsible Management are implemented through the SEC Evaluation Methodology and SEC Evaluation Framework is presented in “WFSRI and the SEC Evaluation Framework.”
